Underwater at Humpback Feeding Ground

Humpback Feeding Ground

Tromsø · Norway

North of Tromsø in the waters between Senja and the mainland, humpback whales follow the herring fleet from November through January, lunge-feeding with spectacular surface breaches that can be observed from the boat before entering the water. Underwater, the whales move fast and close — a 14-metre animal at 5 metres depth in 20-metre visibility is as intense as diving gets. Northern lights are visible from the surface on clear nights, and some operators time the boat drift to coincide with aurora overhead.
