Underwater at Kaldfjord Herring Wall

Kaldfjord Herring Wall

Tromsø · Norway

When Norwegian spring herring overwinter in Kaldfjord just outside Tromsø city, the fjord walls become the backdrop for one of Arctic diving's defining moments: a curtain of tens of millions of fish extending from surface to 30 metres, silver scales catching torchlight on dives that begin and end in total darkness from November onward. Humpback whales lunge-feed at the surface while orca work deeper; divers enter the column between them.
