Skjervøy Orca Ground

Tromsø · Norway

When Norwegian spring herring migrate into the fjords off Skjervøy island between October and January, orca pods follow and stage some of the most dramatic predation sequences in the ocean. Pods of 10 to 30 orca use carousel feeding — herring are corralled into tight baitballs with bubble rings and tail slaps, then individual whales take turns striking with their flukes. Entering the water alongside an active carousel is an experience unlike any other in diving.
