Barred hogfish

Bodianus scrofa

Sighting evidence at Il Medico, Ustica Island

The barred hogfish is a large, solitary wrasse found on deep, clean rocky reefs across the eastern Atlantic and western Mediterranean. At Il Medico, individuals are regularly seen patrolling the deeper sections of the wall between 30 and 50 m. They use their protruding canine teeth to crush sea urchins and shelled invertebrates, and their brightly barred red and white coloration makes them among the most striking fish at this depth range.
