The ocean sunfish is the world's largest bony fish by weight, reaching over 2 tonnes, and is an occasional summer visitor to Ustica's offshore waters as thermoclines bring jellyfish blooms close to the surface. They are pelagic grazers of jellyfish and salps, consuming enormous volumes to compensate for the low caloric density of their prey. Ustica's proximity to the open Tyrrhenian gives divers a realistic chance of open-water sunfish encounters between July and September.

Ocean sunfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
