Caleta Valdés Kelp Forest

Valdés Peninsula · Argentina

A sheltered inlet on the Atlantic coast of the peninsula, Caleta Valdés is choked with tall Macrocystis pyrifera kelp that reaches 15 metres from the seafloor. Magellanic penguins rocket through the fronds at close range, sea lions spiral around divers, and patagonian toothfish move through the gloom at depth. This is cold-water diving at its most cinematic — low viz days are compensated by the density of animal activity.
