Million Dollar Point
Santo Wreck & Reef Circuit · Vanuatu
At the close of World War II, the US military dumped an estimated 30 million dollars worth of equipment — jeeps, bulldozers, forklifts, ammunition trailers, and field kitchens — into the shallows at Pallikulo Bay rather than sell it to the local Ni-Vanuatu community at the low price offered. Today this extraordinary artificial reef descends in a cascade of corroding machinery from just 2 metres to around 30 metres, entirely encrusted with hard corals, sponges, and soft corals. The site is a shore dive with a simple sand and rubble entry, and its shallow sections make it ideal for a second or third dive after the Coolidge. Night dives reveal an entirely different population of hunting moray eels, octopus, and nudibranchs navigating the rusted labyrinth.
