SS President Coolidge
Santo Wreck & Reef Circuit · Vanuatu
The SS President Coolidge is a 196-metre American luxury liner turned troop transport that sank on 26 October 1942 after striking two US mines in the channel off Luganville. She rests on her port side with the bow at 21 metres and the stern dropping below 70 metres, making the vast majority of the wreck accessible to recreational divers. Highlights include the ceramic tile mosaic of "The Lady" in the First Class smoking room, the army field guns still lashed to the forward deck, and the palatial ballrooms transformed into vast artificial reefs encrusted with soft corals and patrolled by barracuda and batfish. Her sheer scale — comparable to the Titanic in length — means most divers spend multiple days exploring different sections. Entry is by shore dive from the beach at Luganville.
