Underwater at Cape Galata Reef

Cape Galata Reef

Dive site

The rocky limestone headland of Cape Galata drops into a series of boulders and crevices down to 18 metres, sheltering dense colonies of Black Sea mussels, oysters, and encrusting bryozoans. Sprat schools circle the shallower sections throughout summer while turbot lie camouflaged on sandy patches between the boulders. The site is the most diver-friendly entry point near Varna and acts as a natural nursery for juvenile Black Sea horse mackerel. Night dives reveal shrimp activity and occasional cuttlefish. There are no sharks in the Black Sea, giving novice divers an unusual sense of openness on the reef.
