Dogtooth tuna are apex pelagic predators that use the Late Island wall as an ambush point, stationing themselves in the blue water off the drop-off and accelerating into baitfish schools with explosive bursts of speed. Their mass — regularly exceeding 60 kg — and the frequency of encounters at Late make this one of the most reliable sites for this species in the Tongan archipelago.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
