Enmedio Reef
Veracruz Reef System · Mexico
Enmedio is one of the outermost and most developed reefs in the Veracruz system, with a shallow lagoon giving way to a crest at 2 meters and a leeward slope dropping to 25 meters. Star corals, brain corals, and elkhorn colonies dominate the crest while the slope hosts gorgonian forests and black coral thickets. Caribbean reef sharks patrol the outer edge, loggerhead turtles graze on the reef flat, and large schools of Atlantic creole wrasse swarm in the water column above the drop-off. French angelfish, queen angelfish, and spotted drumfish are reliable residents in the coral crevices. Summer months bring the clearest water, often exceeding 20 meters visibility.
