Monk Seal Wall
Vis Island · Croatia
A dramatic vertical limestone wall on Vis's northwestern tip drops from 2 m to over 50 m and takes its name from the Mediterranean monk seals that historically pup in the adjacent sea caves — occasional encounters still occur. The upper section hosts dense posidonia seagrass and saddled bream, the mid-wall is covered in red corallium and yellow tube sponges, and deeper sections yield large grouper and enormous conger eels. Rare Adriatic nudibranchs including Flabellina affinis and Hypselodoris valenciennesi appear on the gorgonian fans in summer.
