Ravnik Green Cave
Vis Island · Croatia
The Green Cave (Zelena spilja) on the islet of Ravnik south of Vis is entered by swimming through a partially submerged entrance tunnel at around 1.5 m depth. Inside, sunlight refracts through an underwater window in the cave floor from about 11 m depth, filling the cavern with an extraordinary emerald glow during late morning hours. The walls are encrusted with Mediterranean sponges and small sea anemones, and common octopus are reliably found in every crevice. Nudibranchs — especially Cratena peregrina on the cave mouth hydroids — are an outstanding macro subject.
