Whale sharks at Oslob are provisioned year-round by the local community. The daily feeding keeps a rotating group of 10 to 20 individuals present most mornings. Scientists have documented altered dive behaviour and scarring from boat propellers in provisioned sharks compared to wild populations — visitors should weigh these impacts alongside the conservation funding generated by the programme.
