The reef's boulder fields and kelp gullies shelter very large conger eels, with individuals exceeding 1.5 metres being common at The Smalls's rocky substrate. They emerge from their dens at night to hunt actively but are also present at cave entrances by day, heads protruding from crevices with their characteristically thick, muscular bodies coiled behind. The offshore reef's relative inaccessibility means conger here have not been subject to the hook-and-line pressure affecting mainland sites.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
