Underwater at Mida Creek Mangrove Channel

Mida Creek Mangrove Channel

Dive site

One of the only diveable mangrove channels on the Kenyan coast, Mida Creek is a tidal estuary that opens into a UNESCO-listed biosphere. The dive follows a flooded channel at 2 to 8 m where the roots of red mangroves create an underwater architecture unlike anything on the open reef — a tangle of curved buttresses filtering dappled light and sheltering juvenile reef fish that will eventually colonise the outer sites. Seahorses are found on the root bases, nudibranchs cover the muddy substrate, and ghost crabs scuttle along the channel walls. The experience is more exploratory than conventional reef diving and suits divers curious about the ecological chain connecting forest to ocean.

  • For this site

    • Macro lens / wet lens · Seahorses, nudibranchs, and juvenile fish against mangrove roots reward macro photography. Visibility is low so short working distances are essential.
    • Torch · The root canopy blocks light even in good conditions. A torch reveals colour and isolates subjects against the dark tangle of roots.
