Moray Alley
Watamu & Malindi · Kenya
A labyrinth of coral ridges and sandy channels running roughly parallel to the reef edge, Moray Alley earns its name from the extraordinary density of giant moray eels peering from every second overhang and crevice. Alongside the morays, honeycomb morays and snowflake morays share the substrate with spiny lobster and cleaner shrimp working their way across willing clients. The channels funnel a gentle current that aggregates planktivores in the water column — anthias, chromis, and glassfish shimmer in shifting curtains — while larger predators including bluefin trevally and giant trevally hunt the edges. Nudibranch diversity is surprising for a tropical reef, making this a favourite with macro photographers.
