Gridino Kelp Forest
White Sea · Russia
Tall forests of Laminaria kelp near the village of Gridino shelter a dense community of cold-water invertebrates and fish. Atlantic wolffish lurk in crevices between boulders, lumpsuckers cling to kelp fronds, and sea spiders pick their way across beds of encrusting bryozoa. When sunlight penetrates in summer, the green-gold columns of kelp create one of Arctic diving's most atmospheric scenes.
