Scuba Season
Underwater at Polar Cod Flats

Polar Cod Flats

White Sea · Russia

A shallow sandy plateau where polar cod school in extraordinary numbers during late winter and early spring, drawing harp seals that hunt at speed beneath the ice. Under 1 metre of solid ice the scene is otherworldly: torchlight reflects off silver shoals while seal silhouettes bank and turn above. Visibility can reach 25 metres in February when algae has not yet bloomed and the ice filters light into pale blue columns.
