Manta Scramble North

Yaeyama Manta Coast · Japan

The northern extension of the Manta Scramble reef system along Ishigaki's north coast is where the largest concentrations of reef mantas aggregate during incoming tidal flows, as zooplankton-rich water from the open Pacific is funnelled over the shallow ridge and compressed into a dense food column. Groups of 20 to 50 manta rays have been documented here on single dives during peak season from June through October, performing synchronised barrel rolls and loop feeding in water shallow enough to observe every wingbeat. The cleaning stations at 8 to 12 metres see near-constant traffic, with individual mantas identified by their unique spot patterns queuing for parasite removal by wrasse. The site is so reliable that local operators offer manta-guarantee return trips if no mantas are encountered, though refunds are rare.
