Mnemba Atoll North
Zanzibar Channel · Tanzania
The northern arc of Mnemba Atoll is the Zanzibar Channel's flagship dive — a pristine shallow reef crest that drops to a rubble slope at 25 m, blanketed in hard coral with almost no bleaching scars. Giant moray eels hunt in broad daylight along the coral ramparts, and the resident population of hawksbill turtles is so accustomed to divers that close encounters at the surface are routine. Strong tidal flows from the channel push plankton over the reef, keeping the water column busy with schooling fusiliers and the trevallies that chase them. Visibility is best in the southeast monsoon season when the sea flattens and the current runs predictably from the north.
