Mnemba Night Reef
Zanzibar Channel · Tanzania
The same reef shelf on Mnemba's western flank transforms completely after dark into one of the Indian Ocean's best night dives. Sleeping parrotfish glow in self-secreted mucus cocoons, octopuses stalk the rubble between coral heads, and Spanish dancer nudibranchs — often 30 cm across — spiral in open water when coaxed with a light. Lionfish abandon their daytime lethargy and hunt actively around the reef base, their pectoral fins fanned wide to herd prey into corners. The current dies down after sunset making the dive relaxed and easy to navigate with a torch, and phosphorescence often lights up the water column on the swim back to the boat.
