Underwater at Whale Shark Channel

Whale Shark Channel

Zanzibar Channel · Tanzania

A broad stretch of open channel between Zanzibar and the mainland where whale sharks congregate from November through March, drawn by dense copepod and krill blooms that follow the seasonal thermocline shift. Encounters are typically snorkel or free-dive rather than scuba — the animals cruise at 2 to 5 m depth and standard dive bubbles can startle them — but the experience of swimming alongside a 7 m whale shark filtering the turquoise water is viscerally unforgettable. Spotted eagle rays occasionally cross the channel in pairs and small groups, and bottlenose dolphins frequently ride the bow wave of the spotter boat on the way out. The best encounters happen in the early morning before the sea breeze picks up.
