Sebastião Gomes Reef
Abrolhos Banks · Brazil
Sebastião Gomes is an outer reef pinnacle system at the northern extreme of the Abrolhos Banks, sitting in deeper, more current-swept water than the island dives and attracting open-ocean species in impressive numbers. Hammerhead sharks and silky sharks are regular visitors during the winter months, while nurse sharks rest in the sand channels between pinnacles year-round. The reef's relative isolation means coral cover and structural complexity are among the highest recorded anywhere in the South Atlantic.
