Silvertip sharks are the dominant large requiem shark at Shark Point Addu, with the site's strong current and exposed outer reef position providing ideal habitat for this oceanic species that requires large territories and deep water access. They are distinguished from grey reef sharks by their larger size — commonly exceeding 2 metres — and the distinctive white tips and edges on all fins, which flash in the blue water as they bank and turn in the current. Unlike the more common grey reef sharks which tolerate diver presence with relative equanimity, silvertips display assertive investigative behaviour and may conduct close inspection passes, making buoyancy control and a calm demeanour important at this site.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
