Loggerhead turtles are regular summer visitors to the waters around Filicudi, drawn by the rich invertebrate communities on the wall and the jellyfish populations in the open water approaches to the island. They are the largest Mediterranean sea turtle and nest on sandy beaches further east, using the Aeolian waters as important foraging grounds during the summer months. Divers encounter them most reliably between 10 and 25 metres, where they graze on sponges, sea anemones, and the occasional jellyfish.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
