Peacock Wrasse

Symphodus tinca

Sighting evidence at Gjipe Canyon, Albania

Male peacock wrasse turn extraordinary shades of iridescent blue and green during the April to June spawning season, constructing elaborate nests of algae in rock crevices and guarding eggs with conspicuous territorial displays. Gjipe's intact rocky reef with its undisturbed algae communities provides ideal nesting habitat, and breeding males can be encountered at densities rarely seen on more heavily visited Mediterranean coasts. Their post-spawning colour fades rapidly, so the narrow spring window offers a genuinely rare photographic opportunity.

Peacock Wrasse is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
