Peacock Wrasse

Symphodus tinca

Sighting evidence at Temple of Apollo Underwater, Naxos

Peacock wrasse are among the most colourful and active residents of the rocky shallows around the sunken ruins, constantly picking invertebrates from encrusted stone surfaces. Males display vivid blue-green breeding colouration from spring through summer and can be seen performing courtship displays across the ancient blocks. They are important cleaners of the reef community, removing parasites from larger fish.
