Amami Pygmy Goby

Eviota amamiensis

Sighting evidence at Yoro Reef, Amami Islands

This endemic goby, named for its discovery in the Amami Islands, inhabits the rubble and algae-covered substrate between coral heads on the reef plateau. It is one of several small goby species unique to the Ryukyu archipelago, occupying a narrow ecological niche among decaying coral fragments. Finding this species requires patience and a macro lens, as adults rarely exceed 2 centimetres in length.

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
