Yoro Reef
Amami Islands · Japan
Yoro Reef is a broad table coral plateau on the eastern shelf of Amami Oshima, celebrated for its intact colonies of giant Porites corals estimated to be several centuries old. The reef crest transitions sharply into a vertical wall that drops past 40 metres, attracting grey reef sharks and large pelagic visitors on the incoming tide. Endemic Amami species including rare nudibranchs and small gobies inhabit the rubble zones between coral heads, making this a rewarding destination for macro photographers.
