Kekova Sunken City
Antalya · Turkey
The Lycian city of Simena slid into the sea after an earthquake in the 2nd century CE, leaving stairways, building foundations, and storage chambers visible through 2 to 8 metres of impossibly clear water along the north shore of Kekova Island. Snorkellers can peer down at carved doorways and intact stone walls while divers explore the deeper building remains on the island's southern face where columns and cisterns descend to 12 metres. The site is a Special Protected Area where anchoring and touching ruins is forbidden, preserving extraordinary visibility and rich marine life including sea turtles, octopus, and enormous shoals of two-banded bream swirling between the ancient structures.
