Giant Clam Gardens, Nu'usefata
Apia, Samoa · Samoa
The shallow reef flats off Nu'usefata on Upolu's western coast host one of the densest assemblages of giant clams in the Pacific, with hundreds of Tridacna gigas and Tridacna maxima scattered across a coral mosaic that rarely exceeds 12 m depth. The vivid electric-blue and green mantle patterns of the clams draw macro photographers, while the surrounding coral gardens support an unusually rich invertebrate community including nudibranchs, flatworms, and several species of cone snails. Village-level guardianship under Samoan customary tenure (fa'a Samoa) has kept this reef largely intact, and a local fisheries project actively outplants hatchery-reared juvenile clams to supplement the wild population.
