Peacock mantis shrimp occupy burrows at the sandy margins of the clam gardens, striking at small fish and crabs with club-like appendages that generate one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. At Nu'usefata they are reliably found by torchlight on night dives, their iridescent armour catching the beam from several metres away.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
