Giant trevally patrol Rock Point East in loose hunting groups, using the current-swept corner to ambush fish disoriented by the surge — they have even been documented cooperating with reef whitetip sharks to drive fish from crevices. As apex predators, they help regulate populations of surgeonfish, wrasse, and other mid-trophic reef species that would otherwise overgraze algae from coral surfaces. Their bold curiosity around divers makes for dramatic encounters when drift conditions bring them in close.

Giant Trevally is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
