Blue shark

Prionace glauca

Sighting evidence at Princess Alice Bank, Azores — Faial and Pico

Blue sharks are the most wide-ranging pelagic shark in the Atlantic and converge on Princess Alice Bank from June through September, following the same upwelling currents that concentrate their prey — squid and small schooling fish. Slender, long-finned and extraordinarily graceful, blue sharks are known for close-approach behaviour with divers and are the quintessential mid-Atlantic big-animal encounter. Despite being the most commercially caught shark in the world, they remain relatively abundant at remote Atlantic seamounts.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
