Blue Shark

Prionace glauca

Sighting evidence at Dollabarat, São Miguel

Blue sharks are the star attraction at Dollabarat and are reliably encountered year-round, with peak aggregations from June through September when the Azores current warms and concentrates their squid prey. They are naturally curious and approach within centimetres of divers, making this one of the most intimate shark experiences in the Atlantic. The Azores population is considered one of the healthiest in the North Atlantic, partly due to Portuguese no-take protections inside the EEZ.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
