Grey reef sharks are apex predators of Indo-Pacific coral reefs, patrolling the reef edge and channel margins to control populations of reef fish, octopus, and crustaceans. They are highly attuned to current-driven food delivery and congregate at thilas like Dhonfanu where upwellings concentrate prey. Their presence is a strong indicator of reef ecosystem health as they require substantial prey biomass to sustain local populations.

Grey Reef Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
