Schools of bumphead parrotfish visit Caban Island's outer reef in the early morning to feed, their audible crunching carrying through the water as they bite chunks from massive coral heads. These large aggregations, sometimes numbering 20 to 30 individuals, are most reliably encountered between March and May when calm conditions allow early morning boat departures. Bumpheads are a vulnerable species and the presence of a resident school at Caban is an important indicator of the area's ecological health.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
