Cave Shrimp

Palaemon sp.

Sighting evidence at Padre Nuestro Cave, Bayahibe

Translucent cave shrimp colonise the halocline zone and deeper passages of Padre Nuestro, feeding on organic detritus carried in by tidal exchange. Their near-colourless bodies are an adaptation to the lightless environment and make them almost invisible without a torch, requiring careful observation to appreciate their density.
