Large dusky grouper have claimed territories throughout the wreck's deeper sections, using the shelter of ancient timber and amphora cargo as ambush hunting positions. They are the site's charismatic megafauna and their bold, unhurried behaviour in the presence of divers reflects the relatively protected nature of the site. Juveniles occupy shallower rubble zones while adults concentrate in the 25 to 40 metre range.
