Swordfish

Xiphias gladius

Sighting evidence at Agios Gordios Reef, Corfu

Swordfish are irregular visitors to the open water above the reef in late summer and autumn, drawn by the dense baitfish aggregations that form in productive Ionian current upwellings. Sightings are rare and unpredictable but memorable — typically large adults moving purposefully through the blue at depth. Their occurrence here reflects the Ionian's stronger pelagic productivity compared to the Aegean.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
