The sandy-rocky boundary at Kavos Bay is ideal octopus habitat, and the population density here is among the highest on the island. Each individual maintains a midden heap of discarded shells and crab carapaces outside its den, making occupied dens easy to locate. On night dives, octopus leave their dens and range widely across the sand, using dynamic camouflage that shifts colour and texture in real time.

Common Octopus is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
