Scorpionfish

Scorpaena porcus

Sighting evidence at Paleokastritsa Wall, Corfu

The small scorpionfish species is extraordinarily abundant on the Paleokastritsa wall, exploiting the textured sponge-covered surface for camouflage and sitting motionless for hours at a time. They are found at all depths on the wall and are regularly overlooked until the telltale outline of a dorsal fin or a pair of eyes betrays their presence. Their venom-bearing dorsal spines make it important to hover neutrally and avoid touching the wall surface.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
