The great barracuda is a solitary apex predator that uses stealth rather than speed for most of its hunting, hanging almost motionless in open water until prey fish are within striking range. Juveniles form schools in sheltered mangroves but adults are typically solitary at exposed rocky sites like Blowing Rock. They are famously attracted to shiny objects, which their lateral line may misidentify as the flash of a fish's flank — divers should remove dangling jewellery.

Great barracuda is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
