The splendid toadfish is an endemic species found only on the reefs of Cozumel and a handful of Caribbean sites, with the Corn Islands being one of the very few confirmed populations outside Mexico. This bottom-dwelling ambush predator hides in rubble and under coral slabs, producing a resonant foghorn-like call during spawning season that can be heard by divers. Its vivid yellow and black striped fins are a rare example of honest warning colouration in a fish.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
