Yellowback Anthias

Pseudanthias evansi

Sighting evidence at Kogyo Maru, Coron

Yellowback anthias form dense hover-feeding aggregations around the Kogyo's listing superstructure, picking zooplankton from the current with rapid precision movements while dominant males display their vivid yellow dorsal saddle to maintain hierarchy. All anthias are born female and the dominant individual in a group can transition to male if needed, providing the colony with flexible reproductive capacity. Their constant mid-water presence creates a living orange-and-yellow curtain that makes wide-angle photography effortless.
