Scandola's cave ceilings and overhangs at 20-40 m are encrusted with red coral, one of the Mediterranean's most prized and threatened species. The reserve's protection has allowed colonies to recover to sizes rarely seen elsewhere in the Med. These slow-growing organisms can live for centuries and represent the ecological pinnacle of western Mediterranean deep reef.

Red Coral is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
