One of the largest reef fish in the Indian Ocean, potato groupers reach 2 metres and over 100 kg, ambushing prey from reef ledges with explosive bursts of speed. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, all individuals beginning life as female before the largest individuals transition to male. Kisite-Mpunguti's no-take protection has allowed an unusually high density of large adults to survive at this site.

Potato grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
