One of the largest groupers in the Indian Ocean, the potato grouper can exceed 2 metres and 100 kilograms. It is a solitary apex predator that holds a home territory around a specific cave or outcrop, often for years. Slow and curious, it will approach divers closely. Despite its size, it hunts with explosive speed, engulfing prey in a single strike. Listed as vulnerable due to overfishing across much of its range.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
