Brightly patterned combers hold individual territories across the stonework, boldly approaching divers in the manner typical of a small but confident ambush predator. As hermaphrodites simultaneously producing eggs and sperm, they have a unique reproductive strategy that allows any two individuals to spawn. They control small crustacean and fish populations in the shallow rubble zone.
